Northeast Minneapolis has always been a drinker's neighborhood. You'll find hidden watering holes and dive bars dotted throughout the area, and in recent years several craft breweries have opened in. Add the many longstanding and new restaurants on University, Marshall, 13th, and Central, and you have the makings of a dynamic destination for diners and drinkers.
But what if you don't want alcohol? Unfortunately, many bars and restaurants only offer non-alcoholic beer or Coke/Pepsi products to non-tippling patrons. And in the middle of a craft cocktail resurgence, it can be frustrating if you'd like a special drink without the booze.
There is hope, however. Our little slice of Minnesota has a number of coffee shops, and there are two places that now offer craft sodas (well, we call it pop around here). Here's where to find some good drinking without risk of a hangover.
Mojo Coffee Gallery
This warm little place combines great drinks with an unpretentious art gallery feel. In addition to coffee, you can get good root beer and cream soda, juices, and other small-batch soft drinks. The space is inviting and comfortable, and works by different artists decorate the walls. There is even an artist's space right in the shop where you can see him or her at work. Mojo closes at 6pm on the weekends and 9pm during the week. Located at 2205 California Street.
If you're looking for a place that's open later, this is a great bet. Spyhouse stays open until 11pm daily, giving night owls a place to while away the hours. The space is open and great for working. It's located in the old Land o Nod mattress factory at the northeast corner of Central and Broadway.\\
This popular brewery serves more than great beers: they also offer old-school, locally made sodas. This is a great place if your friends want to drink beer, but you'd rather stick to something soft. Located at 1300 2nd Street in the heart of the Art's District.
Mocktails are excellent here. Many of their non-alcoholic drinks involve some interesting locally produced sodas garnished with the bartender's personal touches. Located at 359 13th Ave, just down the street from Dangerous Man.
I work as a realtor and appraiser throughout the Twin Cities, but Northeast Minneapolis is my home and passion. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you in our neighborhood.
